This project was conceived of by the Sonoma County Economic Development Board brain trust as a part of their Strategic Sonoma economic development action plan and Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy to address the shortage of construction workers after the devastating wildfires of October 2017 that destroyed 5,300 homes in Sonoma County. The wildfires inspired the idea of a new construction building trades training center to train the construction workforce of the future to address the chronic housing shortage exhacerbated by the wildfires. I'm proud to say I led the effort to secure a $ 1 million grant from the Tipping Point Community Foundation that was used to leverage the $ 7 million federal grant awarded to the SRJC announced today as a great example of a public-private partnership between the EDB, the SRJC and the US Economic Development Administration. Congratulations to all who helped to make this possible .
